A SEA OF DREAMS
Initiation at Sea: South Sea Adventure on a Shoestring
A true story by John Glennie

This book contains the personal memoirs and adventures of the famed captain of Highlight and Rose-Noelle, before he was lost adrift in the Great Southern Ocean for 119 days. The story begins when he was an ingenious, young man with a dream to sail away from home to the exotic islands of the South Pacific in the 1960s. What he needed was a boat to begin his dream adventure. He gathered as much skill as he could while working as an apprentice boatbuilder in New Zealand, and over two years — in his parents’ farm shed, kitchen and living room — built his trimaran, Highlight. He learned the basics about sailing with his brother David the hard way, through raw experience. They acquired just enough knowledge, as soon as they could, to set sail on a Sea of Dreams … This book tells his unforgettable adventures.

About the Author
John Glennie did a 5-year apprenticeship in the New Zealand boatbuilding trade. He has logged over 35,000 miles of Pacific Islands cruising in his trimarans Highlight and Rose-Noelle. He holds the unofficial world record for the longest time adrift in a cold climate, in the great Southern Ocean in mid-winter, recorded in his book, The Spirit of Rose-Noelle: 119 Days Adrift (Penguin and Fawcett books). “A marine enquiry was held because it was deemed impossible for us to have drifted back against the prevailing winds to New Zealand. We should have been on a course to Chile,” explains John Glennie in a recent interview.

John Glennie and his brother David were the first overseas multihull yacht to sail to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. John Glennie was voted one of New Zealand’s 10 most influential cruising sailors of all time by New Zealand Yachting Magazine, alongside world-famous Dame Naomi James, the first woman to sail single handed around the world, Capt. Frank Worsley, (Shackleton’s Captain), Johnny Wray, who wrote South Sea Vagabonds, Adrian Hayter, author of Sheila in the Wind, and prominent cruiser and racer, D’Arcy Whiting.

Back from the Dead — The Saga of the Rose-Noelle is a 1996 original docu-drama, released online in 2015. This documentary tells the story of how he and his crew survived 119 days adrift at sea in an upturned trimaran. The Rose-Noelle capsized in the Pacific Ocean on 4 June 1989, and washed up four months later on Great Barrier Island. The TV film Abandoned, released on Netflix, was also based on his book, The Spirit of Rose-Noelle: 119 Days Adrift. The English title of that TV film is Stranded.
